Prefixes
Prefixes can be used with words to alter their meaning.
re = again (znovu něco udělat) rearrange
pre- = before (před, dříve než) pre-war
post- = after (po) post-war
over = too much (příliš) overpriced
under = not enought (nedostatečně) underdone
half- = polo- half-open
semi- = polo- semi-detached
mid- = polo-, uprostřed mid-way
self- = sebe- self-confident
Adjectives
un = negative unkind
in = negative inappropriate
il = negative illegible
ir = negative irregular
im = negative immature
Verbs
un = undo unscrew
dis = negative dislike
mis = to do sth not properly mispronounce
If you find it hard to remember which prefix goes with which word, trust yourfeelings. Pick the one that sounds right to you - or avoid the word.
Instead of "He sounded insincere.", you can say or write "He didn´t sound very sincere."
