Adverbs and word order

Middle position

These adverbs usually feel most comfortable in the middle position:

almost, always, certainly, completely, ever, frequently, hardly, hardly ever, nearly, never, obviously, often, probably, rarely, seldom

  • He was certainly arrested.
  • He has never been arrested.

Notice where middle position adverbs are placed when there is a modal verb in the sentence:

  • He will certainly be arrested.           X         He will be certainly arrested. (wrong)
  • He will never be arrested.               X         He will be never arrested. (wrong)
